Our Lord gave them the "keys of the kingdom," and by the gift of his Spirit fitted them to be the founders and governors of his church ( John 14:16 John 14:17 John 14:26 ; John 15:26 John 15:27 ; 16:7-15 ). The Twelve were called personally by Jesus to an apostolic task at the commencement of His earthly ministry (Matthew 10:1 parallel), and after His resurrection this call was repeated, made permanent, and given a universal scope (Matthew 28:19,20; Acts 1:8). The proclaimers of this message are divinely sent ( Rom 10:15 ). Though the evidenced is less clear, it seems that there is biblical precedent for labeling as "apostles" missionary messengers of the saving gospel in each generation of the church, who receive an inward, subjective call to fulfill an apostolic function of pioneer church planting cross-culturally, a calling that in turn is confirmed by the "outward commissioning" of the church ( Acts 14:4 Acts 14:14 ; Rom 16:7 ; 1 Cor 9:5 ; cf. It was by this last ground of appeal that Paul convinced the original apostles of the justice of his claim. When the prophets did speak of a hope for future deliverance "in the last days, " they refer to a mission for God's messenger or Elijah whom God sends to prepare his way ( Mal 3:1 ); of the Servant-Messiah, anointed to preach good news to the oppressed, whom the Lord sends to bring deliverance ( Isa 61:1 ); and of a remnant of survivors who are sent to evangelize the nations: "They will proclaim my glory among the nations" ( Isa 66:19 ). J.-A. God sent angels to announce to the parents or to the judge himself his role as divinely sent deliverer and to commission him to that task ( Judges 6:11-12 Judges 6:14 ; 13:8 ). The qualifications for fitting one of these categories involves the call of the risen Christ who sends. Verse 4. Lightfoot, Galatians, 92-101; Hort, Christian Ecclesia, Lect II; Weizsacker, The Apostolic Age, II, 291-99; Lindsay, The Church and the Ministry, 73-90. Still, any missionary exercising the "apostolic function" knows the empowerment of God in witness, for the fruit is always God's doing ( 1 Cor 3:7-9 ; 9:2 ). Blasphemy Definition Blasphemy is generally defined as the act or offense of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things, synonymous with irreverence and disrespect of God or Christ. Saul of Tarsus was afterwards added to their number ( Acts 9:3-20 ; 20:4 ; 26:15-18 ; 1 Timothy 1:12 ; 2:7 ; 2 Tim 1:11 ). The empowerment the apostle knows is a gracing, a gifting of effective missionary witness ( Rom 1:5 ; 1 Cor 12:28-29 ; Gal 2:8 ; Eph 4:11 ). He had not been a disciple of Jesus in the days of His flesh; his claim to have seen the risen Lord and from Him to have received a personal commission was not one that could be proved to others; but there could be no possibility of doubt as to the seals of his apostleship. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. He comes to empower the witness to the gospel ( 1 Peter 1:12 ) and to be a salvation blessing, bearing witness to the intimate union believers have with the Father ( Gal 4:6 ). The Twelve have the unique function of providing the revelational and organizational foundation for the church ( Luke 22:14 Luke 22:28-30 ; Eph 2:20 ; Rev 18:20 ; 21:14 ). Their witness to Christ was not only empowered, but also guided and validated by the Spirit ( John 14:26 ). Thus, the essential qualification of an apostle is being called and sent by Christ. It will mean either final redemption or judgment ( 2 Cor 2:14-17 ). Church envoys, who are termed "apostles, " are qualified to serve because of the church's call. We'll send you an email with steps on how to reset your password. To believe that God has sent his Son Jesus on this saving mission is critically decisive for an individual's eternal destiny. The term used by Jesus, it must be remembered, would be Aramaic, not Greek, and apostolos would be its literal equivalent. Only in Herodotus (1.21; 5.38) is it used of a personal envoy. At times he employs the term in the broader sense of messenger or aget ( 2 Col 8:23 ; Php 2:25 ). 1915. vv. In those cases in which he was appealed to or was compelled by some grave scandal to interpose, he rested an authoritative command on some express word of the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:10), and when he had no such word to rest on, was careful to distinguish his own judgment and counsel from a Divine commandment (1 Corinthians 12:25,30). F. Agnew, JBL105 (1986): 75-96; C. K. Barrett, Signs of an Apostle; W. Baur, New Testament Apocrypha2 (1965): 35-74; O. Cullmann, Early Church; E. J. Goodspeed, The Twelve; L. Goppelt, Apostolic and Post-Apostolic Times; J. Barnabas is referred to as an apostle in ac 14:14 ( 11:22-24 ; 13:1-4 ). The noun apostolos [ajpovstolo"] is found only in 1ki 14:6, where the commissioning and empowering of the prophet are clearly in mind. Mission in the Ministry of Jesus. The biblical concept is expressed by the use of verbs meaning "to send, " normally with God as the expressed subject. The word also appears to have been used in a non-official sense to designate a much wider circle of Christian messengers and teachers See ( 2 Corinthians 8:23 ; Philemon 2:25 ) It is only of those who were officially designated apostles that we treat in the article. God is accountable only to Himself. From a comparison of the Synoptics it would seem that the name as thus used was not a general designation for the Twelve, but had reference only to this particular mission, which was typical and prophetic, however, of the wider mission that was to come (compare Hort, Christian Ecclesia, 23-29). When the question of the observance of the Mosaic ritual by GentileChristians arose at Antioch and was referred to Jerusalem, it was "the apostles and elders" who met to discuss it (Acts 15:2,6,22), and the letter returned to Antioch was written in the name of "the apostles and the elders, brethren" (Acts 15:23). The line of prophets from Moses to Samuel was sent by God to provide deliverance for Israel ( 1 Sam 12:11 ). In 2 Corinthians 8:23 and Phil 2:25 the word "messenger" is the rendering of the same Greek word, elsewhere rendered "apostle. Acts 9:17 ; 13:3 ; Rom 10:15 ). "Entry for 'APOSTLE'". Paul sets Barnabas as an apostle side by side with himself (1 Corinthians 9:5; Galatians 2:9; compare Acts 13:2; 14:4,14); he speaks of Andronicus and Junias as "of note among the apostles" (Romans 16:7); he appears to include Apollos along with himself among the apostles who are made a spectacle unto the world and to angels and to men (1 Corinthians 4:6,9); the natural inference from a comparison of 1 Thessalonians 1:1 with 2:6 is that he describes Silvanus and Timothy as "apostles of Christ"; to the Philippians he mentions Epaphroditus as "your apostle" (Philippians 2:25 the Revised Version, margin), and to the Corinthians commends certain unknown brethren as "the apostles of the churches" and "the glory of Christ" (2 Corinthians 8:23 the Revised Version, margin). Acts 5:18 Acts 5:40 ; Rev 18:20 ). On the feast of Pentecost, ten days after our Lords ascension, the Holy Spirit came down on the assembled church, Acts 2; and from that time the apostles became altogether different men, giving witness with power of the life and death and resurrection of Jesus, as he had declared they should. They recognized him as the Christ of God, ( Matthew 16:16 ; Luke 9:20 ) and described to him supernatural power ( Luke 9:54 ) but in the recognition of the spiritual teaching and mission of Christ they made very low progress, held back as they were by weakness of apprehension and by national prejudices. Luke 23:43 - And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you today, you shall be with Me in paradise." God is the creator and controller of the universe and all that is in it, whether animate or inanimate. 287-303. He is an apostle, "not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead" ( Gal 1:1 ). Proud member Judas Iscariot, one of "the twelve," fell by transgression, and Matthias was substituted in his place ( Acts 1:21 ). Copyright © 2021, Bible Study Tools. He will empower Christian believers for witness to the good news of salvation ( Luke 24:49 ; cf. The very fact that the name "apostle" means what it does would point to the impossibility of confining it within the limits of the Twelve. ; Galatians 2:7; compare Acts 13:2; 22:21); but, above all, that he could point to the signs and seals of his apostleship furnished by his missionary labors and their fruits (1 Corinthians 9:2; 2 Corinthians 12:12; Galatians 2:8). To be aware of the presence of God is also to be acutely aware of His sovereignty. To understand the word as we find it in the New Testament it is not necessary to go beyond the New Testament itself. It seems unlikely, however, that either of these uses bears upon the Christian origin of a term which, in any case, came to have its own distinctive Christian meaning. There a number of categories of individuals who are called "apostles" in the New Testament: the Twelve ( Luke 6:13 ); the 120 to 500 who saw the risen Christ ( 1 Cor 15:7 ); Paul ( 15:8-9 ); missionaries ( Acts 14:4 ; Rom 16:7 ; 1 Cor 9:5 ); and church envoys ( 2 Cor 8:23 ; Php 2:25 ). "Had the number been definitely restricted, the claims of these interlopers would have been self-condemned" (Lightfoot, Galatians, 97). These stress patterns are defined in groupings, called feet, of two or three syllables. Apostle (Gk. This commissioning is not limited to the twelve apostles. 1. So closely are Moses' and God's work identified that in some passages it is Moses who brings the people out ( 1 Sam 12:8 ) while in other places it is God ( Joshua 24:5 ; Psalm 105:43, ; cf. The tasks of the apostle varies to some extent according to category. He prays in the high priestly prayer, "As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world" ( 17:18 ). But it seems very unlikely that even toward the end of the 1st century there would be a whole class of men, not only still alive, but still braving in the exercise of their missionary functions all the hardships of a wandering and homeless existence (compare Didache 11:4-6), who were yet able to bear the personal testimony of eye-witnesses to the ministry and resurrection of Jesus. Even though the only place in the Book of Acts where Paul is called an apostle is in reference to the apostles of the church in Antioch (14:4, 14), Luke's portrayal of Paul's ministry as paradigmatic for the church gives implicit support to his apostolic claims. He had said that they were to be His witnesses not only in Jerusalem and Judea, but in Samaria (contrast Matthew 10:5), and unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8). Early in our Lords ministry he sent them out two and two to preach repentance and to perform miracles in his name Matt 10; Luke 9. In his further instructions he indicates that this comparative formula means a full authorization in mission. All rights reserved. 4. a. To reject divinely sent messengers and their message will mean, even for the sons of Israel, receiving the retributive justice and forfeiting kingdom blessings at the last judgment ( Matt 22:1-14 ; Luke 14:17 ). 2 Col 1:1 ; Eph 1:1 ; Col 1:1 ; 1 Tim 1:1 ; 2 Tim 1:1 ; Titus 1:1 ). - Who was declared (so Authorized Version) the Son of God with (literally, in) power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection of (not as in Authorized Version, from) the dead.Supposing the intention here to be to declare the Son's essential Deity, notwithstanding his human birth, we might have expected ὄντος after the γενομένου preceding. Those sent as church envoys engage in spiritual ministry: validating the advance of the gospel ( Acts 8:14 ; 11:22 ); communicating decisions about doctrine and behavior ( Acts 15:27 Acts 15:30 Acts 15:33 ; 21:25 ); providing physical aid that promotes unity ( 11:29-30 ; 1 Cor 16:3 ); and serving as apostolic agents to give guidance and encouragement ( Acts 19:22 ; 1 Cor 4:17 ; 2 Cor 12:17 ; 2 Tim 4:12 ). Of the Old Testament prophets, Isaiah and Jeremiah have the clearest articulation of God's personal call to mission ( Isa 6:8 ; Jer 1:7 ). Matthew 16:21 V-ANP GRK: τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθῆναι NAS: and be killed, and be raised up on the third KJV: and be raised again the third INT: third day to be raised. Jesus' task is to be savior of the world ( 1 John 4:14 ); redeemer of those under law ( Gal 4:4 ); sacrifice for sin and condemnation of sin ( Rom 8:3 ); and propitiation ( 1 John 4:9-10 ). ( Jude 1:17-18 ). Early history and training .--The apostles were from the lower ranks of life, simple and uneducated; some of them were related to Jesus according to the flesh; some had previously been disciples of John the Baptist. More often, however, Paul uses the term to refer to those who had been commissioned by the risen Lord to the apostolic task. Jesus sent them on their mission as innocents, unprotected and unprovisioned ( Matthew 10:9 Matthew 10:16 ; Mark 6:8-11 ; Luke 9:3-5 ). Though this is certainly at the core of the biblical teaching, there is much else the term can teach us about mission. And an angel, which could well be a Christophany, is sent by God to protect the people in their wilderness wanderings and powerfully fight on their behalf in the conquest of Canaan ( Exod 23:20-33 ; 33:2 ). In the case of Matthias, additional qualifications come to light. Incomplete: a broken set of books. Mission in the Early Church. When Saul was confronted by the refulgent glory of the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, his immediate question was, “Who is it, Lord?” And the very fact that he found it necessary to denounce certain persons as "false apostles, deceitful workers, fashioning themselves into apostles of Christ" (2 Corinthians 11:13) shows that there was no thought in the primitive church of restricting the apostleship to a body of 12 or 13 men. So he can say to his disciples when he sends them on mission: "He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me" ( Matt 10:40 ; cf. Bibliography Information Signs and wonders are what God sent Moses to do in Egypt and in the sight of Israel ( Deut 34:11-12 ), as a means of liberation ( Psalm 105:27 ) and validation of his divinely given authority ( Num 16:28-29 ). The centre of the second period of the apostolic agency is Antioch, where a church soon was built up, consisting of Jews and Gentiles; and the central figure of this and of the subsequent period is St. Paul. 2. Paul bases his apostleship on the grace of God, not on ecstatic gifts or the signs of an apostle ( 2 Cor. More than that — Jesus comes with the full authorization of God, so that he fully, even interchangeably, represents him ( John 12:44-45 ). b. Because they had been called by Jesus, had been with Jesus throughout his ministry, and had witnessed his resurrection, they possessed the best possible knowledge of what Jesus had said and done. He is a chosen representative of Jesus Christ according to God's will and decree ( 1 Cor 1:1 ; 2 Cor 1:1 ; Gal 1:1 ; Col 1:1 ; 1 Tim 1:1 ; 2 Tim 1:1 ; Titus 1:1 ; 1 Peter 1:1 ). Originating in Jesus' choice and commissioning of the Twelve, the concept of apostle as divinely commissioned messenger of the good news of salvation plays a major role in the church's thinking about mission. In 1 Corinthians 9:1 Paul is meeting his Judaizing opponents on their own ground, and answering their insistence upon personal intercourse with Jesus by a claim to have seen the Lord. The expression "all the apostles" in 1 Corinthians 15:7 seems to include more than the twelve referred to in verse 5. After the martyrdom of James the Greater ( Acts 12:2 ), James the Less usually resided at Jerusalem, while Paul, "the apostle of the uncircumcision," usually travelled as a missionary among the Gentiles ( Galatians 2:8 ). A pattern of unstressed-stressed, for instance, is a foot called an iamb. ken (brō′kən) v. Past participle of break. Here the word designates function rather than status. 'So she came, and has continued even … Paul realized that he did not meet the criteria for being part of the Twelve or even the 120 to 500. The manner of the apostle's ministry is a paradoxical mixture of honor and dishonor. In earlier classical Greek there was a distinction between an aggelos or messenger and an apostolos, who was not a mere messenger, but a delegate or representative of the person who sent him. The call of the apostle to his task might come in a variety of ways. As the Father sent his Son into the world ( John 3:17 John 3:34 ; 5:36-38 ; John 6:29 John 6:57 ; 10:36 ; John 17:3 John 17:8 John 17:18 John 17:21 John 17:23 ; 20:21 ), Jesus in turn "sends out" his disciples ( 4:38 ; 17:18 ) to continue and extend his mission. All rights reserved. To them, as representing his church, he gave the commission to "preach the gospel to every creature" ( Matthew 28:18-20 ). In founding a church Paul naturally appointed the first local officials (Acts 14:23), but he does not seem to have interfered with the ordinary administration of affairs in the churches he had planted. So significant is the redemptive mission of the Messiah, the Son of God, that God sends an angel not only to announce his birth ( Luke 1:26 ), but to announce the birth of John the Baptist, the messenger who will be sent to prepare his way and introduce him ( 1:19 ; Matt 11:10 ; cf. If any such tendency existed, Paul effectually broke it down by vindicating for himself the right to the name. 5, 8; Psalm 105:17 ). Bibliography. Of course, the Twelve met the added qualification of having been chosen by Jesus during his earthly ministry (cf. Sundered by divorce, separation, or desertion of a parent or parents: children from broken homes; a broken marriage. Mark 9:37 ). Finally, the closing verses of this chapter remind us of the only right response to the truth that Jesus is risen: joy-filled worship of the God who has sent his Son to be our Savior! After his ascension he communicated to them, according to his promise, supernatural gifts to qualify them for the discharge of their duties ( Acts 2:4 ; 1 Corinthians 2:16 ; 1 Corinthians 2:7 1 Corinthians 2:10 1 Corinthians 2:13 ; 2 co 5:20 ; 1 Corinthians 11:2 ). Thus, all apostleship finds its meaning in Jesus the Apostle, sent by God to be the Savior of the world ( 1 Jo 4:14 ). Apostles are fully representative of their Lord ( Matt 10:40 ). The emphasis, however, in the Pentateuchal accounts on mission centers on God's positive action. If one has been personally commissioned by the risen Lord in a post-resurrection pre-ascension appearance, he fits into the category of "the Twelve" or the 120 to 500. "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent" ( 17:3 ; cf. The apostolate was not a limited circle of officials holding a well-defined position of authority in the church, but a large class of men who discharged one--and that the highest--of the functions of the prophetic ministry (1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 4:11). Matt 22:3-4 ; Luke 14:17 ). Nowhere is this more pronounced than in the Gospel of John, where Christ's entire ministry is qualified by the term apostello [ajpostevllw] ("send"). The apostles were also very much aware of God's sending of the Spirit in these last days. In fact, summaries of the northern kingdom's rebellion leading to Assyrian subjugation and exile and Judah's similar end at the hands of Babylon stress that again and again God in his pity sent prophets to the people ( 2 Kings 17:13 ; 2 Chron 24:19 ; 36:15 ; Jer 29:19 ; 35:15 ; 44:4 ). Comparing himself to "one abnormally born, " he claims the title "apostle" because of a personal call from the risen Lord in an appearance from heaven after the ascension ( 1 Cor 15:8-10 ). We have four lists of the apostles, one by each of the synoptic evangelists ( Matthew 10:2-4 ; Mark 3:16 ; Luke 6:14 ), and one in the ( Acts 1:13 ). He has greater glory as the creator of the household of faith and as a Son who rules over it. (6) The office ceased, a matter of course, with its first holders-all continuation of it, from the very condition of its existence (cf. Such signs and wonders, however, were clearly secondary to the apostolic functions of preaching and teaching. 2co 4:6; Gal 1:16). Unlike any previous human sent on a mission by God, Jesus proceeded to send his followers on a mission with the same authority and the same tasks. God has heard their cry under Egyptian oppression, and sends Moses as leader and redeemer ( Acts 7:35 ). . In these two ways his role as fully authorized, indeed interchangeable, representative of God is brought out. They also have full authorization from Jesus, so that those who are listening to them are listening to him ( 10:16 ). Unnecessary additions to KJV text This latter category, however, is understood differently by New Testament writers. Any use or disposition He chooses to make of any part of His creation is His sovereign right. Christ the Apostle Although there is only one explicit reference to Jesus as an apostle ( Heb 3:1 ), implicit references to his having been "sent" by the Father are found throughout the New Testament. Though they are not labeled apostles, the Seventy, sent out two by two, go on the same basic mission ( Luke 10:1-12 ). Jesus is Savior . Most of these references occur in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. While the exact term is not found in the Old Testament, the existence of God’s Kingdom is expressed similarly in the Old Testament. In Luke 24:48 and Corrections to Punctuation Errors in the Bible. of Of course, the Twelve met the added qualification of having been chosen by Jesus during his earthly ministry (cf. All other missions by the prophets to kings and to Israel involved confronting sin using God's law, calling for repentance, and warning of judgment if the monarch or the nation did not turn back to God ( 2 Sam 12:1 ; 1 Kings 14:6 ; 2 Chron 25:15 ). Though their mission would be a failure in terms of a positive response to their message, their commission charged them to be totally obedient ( Isa 6:8 ; Jer 1:7 ). He … (The "twelve apostles" of Revelation 21:14 is evidently symbolic; compare in 7:3 the restriction of God's sealed servants to the twelve tribes.) It was the mission on which they were sent that explains the title. He sent them to "all the nations to the end of the earth" ( Matt 28:19 ; Luke 24:47 ; Acts 1:8 ; 22:21 ; 26:17 ). If someone says: “Jesus is never referred to as “God” in the Bible,” show them 2 Peter, or John’s gospel where Thomas falls before the risen Lord Jesus and says, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28).
