For centuries, the kingdom of Iraden has been protected by the god known as the Raven. The easy initial assumption is that the narrator is the Raven, but if so there's a drastic mismatch between how the people of Iraden see their god and how the narrator describes events. Re: the spinning/turning, it's kind of puzzling me that there are so many theories about it, I might be wrong of course, but it seemed pretty obvious from the context what it was about. And I think it’s very important that it does. The two plotlines, as it were, eventually begin to interweave, with some of the key reveals skillfully timed (though I anticipated one or two, at exactly the right time, that just proves how well-handled they were). It’s not a common style, especially for novels, so I’d imagine it will put some readers off right away. Crossposts other than AMAs are not allowed. This fortnight we’re discussing “The Raven Tower” by Ann Leckie, with special guest Andrew of Bea Nostalgic. Now I want to talk about what happened in it, but can't find anybody doing so yet on the internet — so let's talk here! Well, it turns out, much the same thing. Only an ancient one could have survived that long under that much stress, or been that (quietly) powerful, and the reason S&P wasn't sure for a long time was because it didn't really know what an ancient one was, and nobody else really noticed because they weren't particularly ambitious or active. Some of this is to do with the narrator’s position and role in all this, but it did leave me feeling a bit unfulfilled. : Fantasy - Reddit Just finished Ann Leckie's new fantasy novel and enjoyed it! S&P just...likes people. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. Direct links to trade publication reviews/articles are allowed. Gods can work miracles without a ready source of energy by draining their own power, just as they can create the matter necessary to work miracles by draining their power, BUT it is better for them, to work miracles with minimal drain on their power if all the components are there. They are talking about 'work' in the sense of physics and what is necessary to do 'work.' And that brings me to my one slight reservation and disappointment with The Raven Tower. I hadn’t heard anything about it beforehand, but I expect it’ll be one of the hottest-discussed aspects of a book with many discussable aspects. (He was quick to pick up the yes/no token communication, just like the Siat, the young girl in Ard Vusktia; and it's noted trans people become priests up north, where S&P is from). We all know about physics/energy even if they don't, just like we know plants get energy from the sun, even if they hadn't figured it out yet. Well, the story itself is fairly simple, even familiar, in outline. You get glimpses into Eolo’s mind but only through surmises by the god-narrator (“you might have thought this” or “you seemed unwilling to do that”), and the other characters are even more opaque at times. "The Ravens' Spoils" is the fifth chapter in A Plague Tale: Innocence. use the following search parameters to narrow your results: Please be aware that the sidebar in 'old' Reddit is no longer being updated with information about Book Clubs and AMAs as of October 2018. Any of the language stuff is essentially contracts which reminds me of The Craft Sequence. Gameplay here is more varied as one can choose to use either stealth to avoid or directly combat human enemies, which are in abundance. He’s also clearly trans, established (subtly) quite early on and otherwise never really discussed or “important to the story”. [–]SmallJon 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children), Yeah, I didn't realize until the end of the book that line is about both of the stories happening: S&P's and Eolo's, [–]A_S00[S] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago* (1 child). This gives the author a neat excuse to play with omniscient narration, a first-hand account of events in eons past, and also sets up the other stylistic twist. The priest-king of Iraden is missing, his brother sits on the bench (throne), and his son and heir, Mawat, returns to the Tower (with his trusty right-hand man, Eolo) to figure out what’s gone wrong. It looks like they definitely aren't helping Iraden with anything, but did the Myriad come to invade Iraden? This definitely didn’t feel like a season finale even though it ends on a cliffhanger with everyone in peril. You're right, it looks like they may not have been in contact at all - but that raises further questions about how perfect her timing was; how'd she get there as soon as S&P was freed, with an entire fleet no less? Noté /5. Do we have confirmation that S&P was in contact with the Myriad? (Maybe in their deep contemplation they realized that if they were alive and an Ancient One, the Myriad was too and so they spoke a message to her; or once she regained consciousness she wondered if S&P did too and took the initiative to visit them with her mosquitoes. The wording was "if my surmise is correct," then the incoming fleet of ships was the Myriad; I took that word choice to mean that it wasn't pre-arranged via direct communication (though that still leaves open the question of how S&P could have known the Myriad was alive and coming without direct communication). The second half begins to falter however, feeling a bit messy and without any real direction. In fact, much like her non-human narrator in the Ancillary books, the narrator here is in fact a god (very slight spoiler). Gods gain power through prayer, offering, and sacrifice. Breaking this rule will result in an immediate ban. In order to enter the room, a person must answer a riddle asked by the eagle knocker; if they answer incorrectly, they must wait for someone else who gets it right. I don't think S&P knew it was an ancient one or not until fairly recently, perhaps while it was already in the tower, and then simply because it realises it's still going despite everything. You will walk down a battlefield. Interactions should not primarily be for personal benefit. Spoilers Tower Lord: Was a certain character and his son the same that Vaelin met in Blood Song? Interact with the community in good faith. (It's repeatedly noted how long they spend gaining information and thinking about things, similar to the way people talk about S&P.) Also, I'm pretty sure Eolo doesn't use she/her pronouns: he repeatedly states he's not a woman, and although nb people can use she pronouns he seems most comfortable with people using he. Valentina Palladino - Feb 24, 2019 1:45 pm UTC This is surprising, because most gods, we are told, require prayer and sacrifice to do godly things, and how can these gods have received prayer and sacrifice before there were any humans to pray and sacrifice? And truthfully.". To be fair, Eolo is never mis-gendered, even by the villains, in the entire book, but he’s also called “you” far more than “he”. However, I can’t decide whether the use of second person was a brilliant way to force the reader into the perspective of someone they may not normally identify with, or whether the use of the pronoun “you” somehow covers up, or abdicates, what seems to be one of the key issues in trans activism: correct pronouns. Reflecting on it, it’s no doubt appropriate and not as vague as it appears (gods in this world cannot lie, so what the narrator says will happen next almost certainly will), but it’s not what you are used to. I found it difficult to read at first, due to the unusual narrative style (the narrator speaks directly to one of the characters throughout) which struck me at first as merely precious, but that style quickly proved to be a wonderful way to tell that particular story. In fact, much like her non-human narrator in the Ancillary books, the narrator here is in fact a god (very slight spoiler). That’s not to say there’s no characterisation, but it’s very subtle, and readers who like to identify emotionally with characters, or paint clear pictures of people, may find them a bit remote. I agree with others who have said that they think Strength and Patience didn't realize they were an Ancient One until fairly late into the narrative (of the past, not the present to be clear); and that the ability to exert power without language/offerings was part of that realization. All events must be coordinated with the mod team. Even though the dog god made the servants pray them in prayer form the turning was irrevocably service to S&P, even unknowingly as the Raven did. So the “you” is not “you, the reader”, but it does put you in that person’s shoes. That person is Eolo, who is a warrior from a humble background now serving as close friend and advisor to Mawat, the heir to the bench (throne). It’s definitely in that award-winning class, for me, but I also recognise it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Many may posit that gods are real, and plentiful, but Leckie really takes that and runs with it in, as you might expect, a science-fictional way. I feel like the question posed by S&P themself about why Eolo is so fascinating to them is something meant for us to come to a conclusion to or understanding of. The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie (Book Review), Well, it turns out, much the same thing. One other thing about this first-into-second person style is that it keeps most of the characters at a distance. Am I just missing something else obvious? Why was S&P talking to Eolo this whole time/find such a fascination with him? I don't think it was a sort of offering or form of worship because the dog turned it into an act of worship for himself and not Strength and Patience. /r/Fantasy is the internet’s largest discussion forum for the greater Speculative Fiction genre. I think all that sort of expectation is a lot to live up to, so keeping that in mind, I think it largely succeeds. The ending comes very abruptly, with the big reveal (that’s possibly not that big by that point if you’ve followed along) and then just a few rushed paragraphs to wrap everything up. I haven't really figured out the turning thing; I understood it as some Special Trick from a deep understanding of how the gods' powers worked, maybe a relation between force and power (converting the force necessary to turn the rock into power?).
